[Background of the Establishment of AIRoA]
In recent years, as AI technology has advanced, the need for foundation models in the robotics field has been increasing. However, there is currently a lack of frameworks for sharing the large-scale data required for such models. In response, AIRoA was established in December 2024 with the aim of building a robot data ecosystem through cross-industry data collection and the development of foundation models.
As an initial development phase, AIRoA will develop and release a base operational dataset and robot foundation models during 2025. Next, in the social implementation phase from 2026 to 2029, AIRoA will refine these foundation models, collaborate with development partners to create specialized models, and promote the real-world deployment of AI robots. From 2030 onward, in the community development phase, AIRoA plans to further energize the AI robotics development community and strengthen initiatives to expand the adoption of AI robots in society.
[Purpose of Participation]
In June 2024, GMO Internet Group, Inc. established GMO AI & Robotics Corporation (hereinafter “GMO AIR”), a general trading company that connects AI and robotics. In November 2024, the Group also began offering “GMO GPU Cloud,” a high-performance cloud service equipped with NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs, designed to meet the needs of generative AI and high-performance computing (HPC). Through these initiatives, the Group has been actively expanding its services in the AI and robotics industry.
AI and robotics are expected to play a critical role in addressing social challenges facing Japan, such as labor shortages and an aging population. The robot data ecosystem that AIRoA aims to build is an essential foundation for solving these issues and strongly aligns with GMO Internet Group, Inc.’s vision.
Through participation in this project, GMO Internet Group, Inc. will contribute to AIRoA’s activities by providing high-performance GPU computing resources and dispatching specialized personnel, thereby supporting the advancement of Japan-originated AI robotics technologies and strengthening international competitiveness.
